Sports stars Doddie Weir and Eilidh Doyle received honorary degrees from Abertay University as the pair joined graduates in a day of celebration.

The university’s graduation ceremonies run from Wednesday to Friday, with those who studied at the School of Applied Sciences receiving their certificates on Wednesday morning.

The School of Business, Law and Social Sciences and School of Design and Informatics students received theirs in the afternoon.

Joining those who were awarded degrees was rugby union legend Doddie, 51.

Having earned 61 international caps for the Scotland team, Weir founded the My Name’5 Doddie Foundation in 2017 after being diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease.

Millions raised to find a cure

Since its inception, the charity has raised millions of pounds to aid research into the causes of the disease and investigate potential cures.

Also receiving an honorary degree on the day was Scotland’s most decorated track and field athlete, Eilidh, 35.

Doyle, who is from Perth, represented Great Britain at the 2012 Olympic Games in London and won an Olympic bronze medal in the 4 x 400 metres relay at the 2016 Games in Rio de Janeiro.

She was also the first woman to carry the flag for Scotland at the opening ceremony of the Commonwealth Games in 2018.

A huge honour

Eilidh said the honorary degree was a “huge honour” and came as “quite a surprise”.

She said: “I am very passionate about sport, wellbeing and mindset so to have that recognised by others is really special.

“I have many connections with the university itself but also with Dundee as it is the hometown of my mum and grandparents.

“I think given what’s happened over the last couple of years, for these students to achieve their degrees and graduate deserves a lot of recognition.”

Speaking about the honorary graduates, professor Liz Bacon said: “This year’s honorary graduates are highly esteemed in their respective fields and are the perfect role models for our graduates and the university more widely.

“I’m delighted that they have accepted our invitation and look forward to welcoming them to the Abertay family.”
