Dundee United to quiz Jamie Robson after claims he “blacked up” for fancy dress costume

Dundee United are to quiz Jamie Robson after pictures alleging the player “blacked up” for a fancy dress party were posted on social media.

The images show a man who has blacked up and dressed as a beach seller.

Several Dundee United fans condemned the image as racist and offensive with some suggesting the club should fire Robson as a result.

One fan, Chris Hughes, said: “He should be sacked instantly for that.”

Richard Wilson posted: “Dundee United’s Jamie Robson is obviously getting into trouble for this bit of fancy dress.

“Some calling for a sacking – unsure whether it’s that or just a very sharp education the boy needs.”

Michael Binnie posted: “I am not offended by this, however, 1000s will be and will see this as a form of racism.

“It might not be to you or me but the act of ‘blackface’ is and has always been controversial since Laurence Olivier used boot polish on his puss in Othello. Why bother?”

A spokesman for Dundee United said: “The club will speak to the player and the content of the discussion will remain internal.”

The incident comes nearly a year after Robson was hauled in for talks with club bosses after footage was shared online of him dancing and drinking a green liquid from a pint glass, while driving.

The 45-second clip — which was recorded from a Snapchat story — showed him sipping on an unknown green drink, taking his hands off the wheel and singing into the camera.

He was called in for talks with then manager Czaba Lazslo but the club took no further action against him and said they were satisfied the drink was not alcoholic.

Robson subsequently signed a two-year extension to his deal with the Tannadice side in May.

He was not in the squad for United’s 1-1 draw with Greenock Morton at Cappielow on Saturday.
