Scottish Liberal Democrat leader Willie Rennie took a break from Brexit at the weekend to scoop gold at Ceres Highland Games.

The north east Fife MSP was first past the post in the 1,600 metre open at what is Scotland’s oldest highland games event.

A procession through Ceres led by the City of St Andrews Pipe Band marked the start of the 702nd spectacle, which is always held on the last Saturday in June.

Despite the threat of showers, it attracted a good crowd for the full programme of running, cycling, wrestling, heavy events, highland dancing and piping kept everyone entertained.

But there was no hammer throwing due to the tight confines of the 200m circuit at Bow Butts, where all the action takes place.

The biggest prize of the day was the £200 which goes to the winner of the open 90 metres handicap.

It was won by Jack Beattie from Rosyth, who broke the tape in 9.92 seconds.

There were good fields for both the open 800 metres and 1,600 metres handicaps and in the youth races Sean Bates from Tullibody won all three events on the card.

In the cycling events, despite the slippy under-wheel conditions, there were no spills, which is unusual for the tight Bow Butts circuit.
