A stretch of road south-east of St Andrews was closed as four fire crews tackled a field blaze.
The incident affected the A917, between the Fairmont golf resort and Boarhills.
Police Scotland warned drivers to avoid the area as traffic was building shortly before 2pm on Thursday.
Firefighters, were called to the scene just after noon, as crews battled a fire across 40 acres of land.
Residents feared homes would be engulfed in smoke
Boarhills resident Gordon Massie said clouds of thick smoke began to edge near his home on the A917 as the fire spread across the field.
He said: “The fire started after lunchtime and then started spreading across the field towards the road which is where my house is.
“The smoke was so thick crossing the road.
“Thankfully the fire crew put hoses on to dampen down the fire and about seven farmers brought their tractors along the edge of the field cutting the crops and going round them to stop the fire spreading.”
“The smoke has diminished now but police are still blocking the road.
Footage shared on the Fife Jammer Locations Facebook page shows smoke billowing across the road.
Police Scotland confirmed the road was reopened at 2.50pm.
A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “We were alerted at 12.06pm on Thursday to reports of a fire within a field near Boarhills, St Andrews.
“Operations control immediately mobilised four fire engines to the location and firefighters are currently extinguishing the fire.
“We received the stop message at 2.47pm.”
It comes after firefighters were called to battle fires in fields near Cupar and Kennoway earlier this week.
