Manager Ray McKinnon rewarded for patience as Dundee United sign Tony Andreu

Dundee United have pulled off a major coup by signing Frenchman Tony Andreu on a one-year loan deal from Norwich City.

This eye-catching piece of transfer deadline night business, which is subject to clearance, sees manager Ray McKinnon’s determination to be patient and wait for the right player to become available pay off handsomely.

It is only 18 months ago that Andreu moved from Hamilton for £1 million to be reunited with former Accies boss Alex Neil at Carrow Road.

The former Monaco youth had enjoyed a successful time at New Douglas Park, scoring 28 goals in 70 games before moving south.

The 28-year-old has been playing for Norwich’s under-23 side of late as an overage player and scored a hat-trick on Tuesday night as the Canaries won 6-1 away to Peterborough in the Checkatrade Cup.

Although better known as a midfielder at Accies, United’s statement welcoming Andreu to the club indicated that he will be used further up the park by the Tangerines.

It read: “A creative player who can play across various attacking positions, Tony will add to manager Ray McKinnon’s forward options.”

McKinnon was understandably pleased with his final signing of the transfer window after the recruitment of defenders Frank van der Struijk and William Edjenguele.

The United boss said: “I am delighted with this capture.

“Tony is an excellent player, who is a proven goalscorer, and he will add real quality and goal threat to our squad.”

Meanwhile, young Tannadice duo Cammy Ballantyne and Aaaron Murrell have gone out on loan.

Ballantyne has joined Montrose and Murrell is off Cowdenbeath, with both loan deals lasting until mid-January.
