Explorer Road in Dundee, where a dais has been set up for dignitaries to pay their respects.

Dundee will play a major part as the Queen’s cortege makes its journey from Balmoral to Edinburgh on Sunday.

The late monarch’s coffin will travel through the city with thousands of people expected to turn out to see the historic occasion.

Officials say it will be an event of “unprecedented scale”.

We have a full guide with all you need to know for viewing the cortege in Dundee.

When does the cortege arrive in Dundee?

Following a journey through Aberdeenshire, Aberdeen and Angus, the cortege is expected to arrive in the north of Dundee at around 2pm – though this time is just a guide.

It will travel down the A90 at Powrie Brae before turning right at the Forfar Road junction and travelling along the Kingsway to the Swallow Roundabout.

Where are the best places to view in Dundee?

Safe viewing points will be available along the A90 Forfar Road and the Kingsway.

Stewards will guide people on viewing areas and crossing points but most are expected to line the pavements that run alongside the dual carriageways.

Are there official events in Dundee?

Civic dignitaries from across Tayside and Fife, including lord lieutenants and council leaders, will appear on a dais – a small platform – on Explorer Road, close to Dundee Technology Park, to pay their respects to the cortege as it passes along the Kingsway.

This is expected to happen just after 2.15pm.

Later, at 5pm, a special meeting will be held of Dundee City Council via Microsoft Teams.

During this, a proclamation of the accession of King Charles III will be read.

Members of the public can sign up to view the event.

Where to park in Dundee?

Dundee City Council says those travelling into Dundee should allow plenty of time and park in designated areas.

  • From the south: Vehicles will be routed across the Tay Road Bridge to the Swallow Roundabout, then up the Kingsway to parking at Camperdown Park.
  • From the west: Traffic at the Swallow Roundabout will be taken east on the Kingsway to Camperdown Park.
  • From the north-west: Vehicles will be routed via Coupar Angus Road to parking at Camperdown Park.
  • From the east: Vehicles coming along the A92 Arbroath Road will be routed up the Kingsway to the Pitkerro junction, then via Clepington Road to a temporary facility at Fairmuir Park.
  • From the north: Drivers will be routed from the foot of Powrie Brae along Claverhouse Road then south on Old Glamis Road to playing fields opposite Dundee and Angus College.
  • Within Dundee: Residents should use the nearest car park from those listed above. However, given the volume of traffic expected, and the limited availability of parking, locals are being encouraged to walk to the route or use public transport wherever possible – though there will be disruption to buses with Xplore suspending from around 1.30-3.30pm.
  • Disabled parking: A limited amount of disabled parking will be made available at Kinnoull Road, Dunsinane Industrial Estate.

What roads will be closed in Dundee?

Before and after the movement of the cortege, the route remains open and fully operational.

However, there will be rolling road closures as the Queen’s coffin passes.

  • The northbound carriageway of the Kingsway and A90 will remain open throughout, as will minor residential roads onto the northbound carriageway of the Kingsway between Riverside Drive and Forfar Road.
  • Minor residential roads onto the southbound carriageway of the Kingsway between Forfar Road and Riverside Drive will be closed from mid-morning to late afternoon on Sunday.
  • Old Glamis Road Roundabout, Strathmartine Road Roundabout, Kings Cross Road Roundabout, Coupar Angus Road Roundabout, Myrekirk Road Roundabout and the eastbound carriageway of the Kingsway will remain open but may be closed at short notice, at the discretion of police.
  • Those who require to travel between the Perth area and points north of Forfar, or vice-versa, are being encouraged to consider alternative routes via Coupar Angus, or time their journeys to avoid the afternoon period where possible.

Will anywhere else be closed in Dundee?

Camperdown Wildlife Centre, the Regional Performance Centre for Sport and Caird Park golf courses will all be shut.

Public skating will be unavailable at Dundee Ice Arena.

The Dundee Stars v Glasgow Clan ice hockey match will also be delayed, with a new 7pm face-off.

When will the cortege leave Dundee?

It is expected the cortege will leave Dundee just after passing the dais around 2.15pm.

It will then travel south on the A90 and M90 past Perth and through Fife before reaching Edinburgh at around 4pm.
