Pop in the City events around Europe have a loyal and enthusiastic following.

Around 500 women from all corners of the globe will compete in an urban race in St Andrews previously staged in Hamburg, Geneva and Paris.

Popins, as they are nicknamed, will take on a series of challenges which could include caber tossing, abseiling and Highland dancing.

The historic town will be the first in the UK to play host to Pop in the City, a series of events across Europe with a loyal and enthusiastic following.

Popins, women aged from 18 to 63, travel to various European destinations to take part in eight-hour team challenges and experience the local culture.

The St Andrews race was so popular places sold out in five days last December.

On Saturday the Popins will delve into the medieval history of the home of golf and seat of Scotland’s oldest university as they undertake tasks which will require strategy, courage and curiosity.

Challenges have yet to be revealed but may involve putting on the famous Himalayas, falconry, wood-carving and whisky.

Clémentine Charles, co-founder of Pop In the City, said: “We are very excited to work on a Scottish Pop In in the beautiful city of St Andrews and create challenges together with locals in order to highlight its charm and history.

“Since we announced St Andrews as the destination, we have received lots of positive feedback from Popins who are looking forward to doing a Pop In the City in the UK and are thrilled to come to Scotland.”

St Andrews’ business improvement district company was instrumental in bringing the event to the town and St Andrews University, its sponsor, will play a major role in its organisation as well as provide accommodation.

Jane Kennedy, BID St Andrews manager, said: “Our hope is to develop an emotional bond and legacy with this year’s Popins and give them a taste of what Fife, and St Andrews in particular, has to offer.

“We will anticipate their return in future years as visitors, students and business women alike.”

Debbie Maccallum, chair of Tourism St Andrews, said: “Pop In St Andrews promises to be a key event not only for St Andrews in 2019 but for Fife and for Scotland.

“We will certainly be able to provide the visiting Popins with a wonderful experience and a truly warm welcome which St Andrews is renowned for globally.

“This is such an exciting event for St Andrews to host and we cannot wait to welcome our Pop In the City challengers.”
