An opening date for the new Blairgowrie Recreation Centre has been revealed.

Construction work on the £36 million facility is expected to begin by the end of May this year.

And Perth and Kinross Council bosses say the centre will then open to the public in December 2024.

Exterior work would then be finished off between the end of the year and August 2025.

Swimming pool, gym and dance studio

Plans for the facility were unanimously approved by Perth and Kinross Council in August.

It will replace the building on Beeches Road which is more than 40 years old and does not “suit modern day needs”.

The centre will feature a swimming pool, four-court sports hall, gymnasium, fitness suite, dance studio and external artificial sports pitch.

The old centre will be demolished but is staying open until the new building can be used.

The centre was initially meant to open in 2020 but was put on hold after £3m was removed from its budget in 2018.

Councillor Grant Laing, Perth and Kinross Council leader, said: “These are all major projects that will make a real difference to residents across Perth and Kinross.

“In March we agreed additional funding for the new Blairgowrie Recreation Centre and I’m pleased work will start on this long-awaited project very soon.

“It will be a tremendous boost to the Blairgowrie area, with a swimming pool, fitness room and more that will meet the needs of the community and encourage more people to take part in healthy activities.”
