Several businesses near Camperdown Park in Dundee are set to make changes to their operations during Radio 1’s Big Weekend in Dundee.
More than 80,000 fans will enjoy three days of music at the festival on May 26 to 28.
Lewis Capaldi, The 1975, the Jonas Brothers and Wet Leg are among the acts set to perform.
Work began last week to set the site up.
While the Big Weekend is on, several road closures or restrictions will be in place around the park.
It will mean no vehicles will be able to access Camperdown Leisure Park, next to the main park, which is home to several fast food restaurants such as McDonald’s, a hotel, Dundee Ice Arena and Cineworld.
The Courier has contacted the businesses at Camperdown to ask their plans during the Big Weekend.
Nando’s and McDonald’s changes for Big Weekend
- Nando’s has confirmed its restaurant will be shut completely during the event. A spokesperson told The Courier: “We’ll be closed on Saturday and Sunday because Radio 1’s Big Weekend will be providing all the vibes for the people of Dundee. We’re going to fire up our grills again on Monday May 29 to keep the good times going.”
- McDonald’s says it will keep its Camperdown Leisure Park restaurant open during Big Weekend, with sit-in and takeaway options available. However, due to the travel restrictions, the drive-thrus will be shut – while home deliveries will also be unavailable.
- KFC says its restaurant will only be open to those attending Big Weekend. A spokesperson said: “Our other Dundee restaurants at Murraygate, Tom Johnston Road and Milton Asda will be open as usual to make sure fans can get their fried chicken fix.”
- Cineworld says it will remain open all weekend but customers will not be able to drive into the leisure park.
- Dundee Ice Arena has confirmed it will be shut between Friday May 26 and Sunday May 28.
- Weavers Mill restaurant, which is attached to the Premier Inn hotel, will remain open – but with some changes. A spokesperson said: “Our bar is open from 11am-2am Friday-Sunday, our kitchen is open 11am-5pm Friday-Sunday, and Fuzzy Ed’s (soft play) is closed all weekend.” The venue is also putting on a DJ on the Sunday night.
It has already been confirmed that parts of Camperdown Park itself, along with the likes of the wildlife centre and play facilities, will be closed while the Big Weekend takes place.
Rock duo named as final Big Weekend act
Meanwhile the final act on the line-up for Radio 1’s Big Weekend has been announced.
Royal Blood will perform on the main stage on the Sunday of the festival.
The Figure It Out duo return to Dundee having performed at the Caird Hall in 2019.
Temporary studio appears
Elsewhere in the city, what appears to be a temporary Radio 1 studio has appeared outside the V&A.
The BBC has not officially confirmed when it will be broadcasting from the unit.
However, Radio 1’s Life Hacks show is set to broadcast from Dundee this week.
It will include events at the city’s universities and from inside the V&A.
